corrective jaw surgery and reconstruction in central fl

Orthognathic surgery is needed when the top and bottom jaws don’t meet correctly and/or teeth don’t adequately fit within the jaw. Teeth are straightened with orthodontics, and corrective jaw surgery repositions a misaligned jaw. This not only improves facial appearance, but also ensures that teeth meet correctly and function properly.

Who Needs Orthognathic Surgery?

People who can benefit from orthognathic surgery include those with an improper bite, or jaws that are positioned incorrectly. Jaw growth is a gradual process and in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates. The result can be a host of problems that may affect chewing function, speech, or long-term oral health and appearance. Injury to the jaw and birth defects can also affect jaw alignment. Orthodontics alone can correct bite problems when only the teeth are involved. Orthognathic surgery may be required for the jaws when repositioning is necessary.

Difficulty in the following areas should be evaluated:

  • Difficulty in chewing, biting, or swallowing
  • Speech problems
  • Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
  • Open bite
  • Protruding jaw
  • Breathing problems

Any of these symptoms can exist at birth, be acquired after birth as a result of hereditary or environmental influences, or as a result of trauma to the face. Before any treatment begins, a consultation will be held to perform a complete examination with x-rays. During the pre-treatment consultation process, feel free to ask any questions that you have regarding your treatment. When you are fully informed about the aspects of your care, you and your dental team can make the decision to proceed with treatment together.

Technology & Orthognathic Surgery

Dr. Whitman, Dr. Martinez, Dr. Goldberg, or Dr. Campbell uses modern computer-aided techniques and three-dimensional models to show you exactly how your surgery will be approached. Using comprehensive facial x-rays and computer video imaging, we can show you how your bite will be improved and even give you an idea of how you’ll look after surgery. This helps you understand the surgical process and the extent of the proposed treatment.

If you are a candidate for corrective jaw surgery, Dr. Whitman, Dr. Martinez, Dr. Goldberg, or Dr. Campbell or will work closely with your dentist and orthodontist during your treatment. The actual surgery can move your teeth and jaws into a new position that results in a more attractive, functional, and healthy dental-facial relationship.

Patient Review by Hannah L

Dr. Whitman is the most talented jaw surgeon you will ever meet. He is very attentive and cares about his patients well being and goals. I had both of my jaws done upper and lower when I was 17 years old in 2013. I had the surgery when I was in high school. Needing both jaw done is rare and I was scared to say the least. I am now 25 and Dr.Whitman changed my life for the better and I don’t say that lightly. Initially when I met him I was beyond scared to get the surgery. I was in braces the third time and we tried everything to fix my bite to avoid surgery. However I was born with a bony jaw and was having severe TMJ pain at such a young age. Dr. Whitman explained to me everything about the surgery and addressed any issues and concerns I had beforehand. He also checked in often after the procedure and follow up. Before getting the surgery if you decide to get it Dr. Whitman will tell you everything you need to know. Getting surgery was the last option for me. I needed the surgery because of pain and none of my teeth met. My orthodontist and dentist told me that I would not have teeth by the time I would be 30 years old. I could only use 15 percent of my bite due to all the space and only 4 teeth meeting in the back. My parents and I tried everything to fix it so getting this surgery truly was the only way to fix it. I could not have asked for a better doctor than Dr. Whitman. I have not seen him in a long time but I hope to stop by one day to tell him thank you for everything he has done for me and my family. I would highly recommend Dr. Whitman for anyone looking for a phenomenal doctor who has the experience and cares for his patients like no other. He is the person to go to, he knows what he is doing and his record speaks for itself. I will forever be grateful for the impact he made on my life. Now I have a confident smile and no jaw issues. Dr. Whitman is the surgeon to go to he is the best of the best. Now looking at my pictures I get emotional because if I hadn’t met Dr. Whitman or went to a doctor who didn’t have the expertise that he has it could have been a very different outcome . I will forever be grateful to Dr. Whitman and the staff for helping me get through one of the toughest surgeries I’ve had in my life. I am happy I decided to go through with it. If you are someone like me who has and needs a lot of work done on your teeth this is the place to go to for any of your needs. I talk about Dr. Whitman to anyone I know if they are looking for a jaw surgeon. He truly is a doctor you can trust that will take care of you and help you from the moment you walk into the office.
