Dr. Dean H. Whitman grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. He received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the Louisiana University School of Dentistry.
Following graduation from dental school, Dr. Whitman was commissioned in the United States Air Force and was on active duty for 14 years. He served in Arizona, England, Mississippi, California, and Texas.
He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the David Grant Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base in California. Dr. Whitman served on the teaching faculty at both David Grant Medical Center and at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. His military decorations include the Air Force Achievement Medal, two Air Force Commendation Medals, and two Air Force Meritorious Service Medals. He was the recipient of the Vincent Farhood Outstanding Educator Award in 2000, and he has served on medical humanitarian missions to Peru and Swaziland. In 2011, Dr. Whitman retired from the United States Air Force Reserve with the rank of Colonel.

Dr. Whitman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a Fellow of the National Board of Dental Anesthesiology, and a member of the American Dental Association, the Florida Dental Association, and the Dental Society of Greater Orlando. Dr. Whitman is experienced in all areas of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and enjoys treating children. He has special interests in orthognathic surgery, dental implants, and the use of technology to improve care for his patients.

I chose regular numbing over sedation because of expense. I now understand others’ choice of sedation lol. Dr. Whitman was the most gentle with numbing and explained everything I would feel and hear. Although there were moments of extreme discomfort when root broke off, at least he moved swiftly and the pain didn’t last long! I was treated with the utmost kindness and protection (plastic covering of chair and special scheduling due to Coronavirus concerns). Dorothy, Jill and Maria helped me laugh through my jitters and reassured me I would be well cared for. Dr. Whitman did such a fine job I haven’t even needed pain meds! I did follow all at home thorough instructions given me to take home, I.e. doing ice packs and salt rinses. Thank you to the entire Lake Mary staff and Dr. Whitman! Brenda Monger
